Fruitarianism is NOT an Eating Disorder
Posted: 22nd July 2010 by Michael in Exploring ControversiesWikipedia gives the following definition of Eating Disorders:
Eating disorders are a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual's physical and emotional health.
Insufficient food intake usually manifests as calorie restrictive diets (anorexia), and excessive food intake -- as uncontrollable binges often followed by self-induced vomiting (bulimia). These people either are not able to stop eating foods they are addicted to or they are afraid to eat any food.
But I also believe that anyone who is eating foods that are clearly harmful for their health, anyone who eats for the brief pleasure of their tastebuds with disregard to long term ill consequences – has an eating disorder.
Fruitarianim is based on how all animals eat in their natural habitat: raw, unprocessed, species specific foods, one type of food at a time, when hungry until full, and whatever is in season, what is available, what is easy to get. I eat for health and by default my body maintains a healthy body weight. I eat until I am satisfied. And I eat for pleasure -- I love fruit. I believe I have a very natural and healthy relationship with food. If you try Fruitarianism – you will clearly see how many people in our society actually have an eating disorder, and perhaps, you will be a little sad to see how disorderly your own pattern of eating used to be.

You are my hero! I can't wait til I get off my ARSE and do this way of eating. Thanks for all that you do.
I have noticed when i eat a ton of fruit i have more energy and feel more connected to the world around me. when i eat a ton of cooked food like beans and rice i usually just fall asleep or am in such a bad mood that no one wants to be around me. i had noticed this trend in my body and then i found your websit. this diet has changed my attitude and inspired me to eat for my health.
As someone who has dealt with an eating disorder in the past I found this video a little bit offensive. Having an eating disorder is not a choice and people with eating disorders are not "crazy". I understand where you're coming from, and I know it must be really frustrating having people accuse you of having an eating disorder just because your diet differs from the mainstream, but I think it would be possible to explain the difference between a fruitatarian diet and an eating disorder without putting down people who do struggle with eating disorders. Just my 2 cents. I respect your diet and your lifestyle and I hope you don't take this the wrong way
I started adopting a fruitarian diet a few months ago. When I lost weight(120 – 113lbs), my parents and family members labeled me immediately as "anorexic" and took me to a doctor where I was labeled as having an eating disorder. I believe that the seven pounds I lost over the months were 7 pounds of undigested waste and other toxins. Strangely though what the doctors didn't see was that I did not even develop one illness like catching the flu or the cold, and I didn't get a flu shot this year. Amazingly, last year I got a flu shot, and I did get sick at least three times. Finally I was forced to give up my fruitarian diet, having impure foods and chemicals being forcefully shoved down my throats by doctors and family. Initially, I developed skin rashes, dry lips, anal rashes, and discolored skin because they ignorantly filled my body with toxic chemicals and foods. Fruits and some non-starchy vegetables are the way to go.
And God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."(Genesis 1:29)
Like "S," I too have suffered from an eating disorder in the past. For 6 1/2 years of my life I had a very serious eating disorder, a mix of anorexia and bulimia. It was a living hell, every single day every thought I had was of food, my body, or negative thoughts about myself in general. Overcoming that was one of the hardest things I've ever done. And I still don't feel 100% recovered, I have times where I slip up occasionally. Turning vegan 4 years ago drastically changed my relationship with food, and I began to actually enjoy eating again. However, for the past year my health has not been very great, mainly digestive problems and minor sickness. I have been a long time follower of durianrider on youtube, and I am now reading 80/10/10. I'm in the process of transitioning to the 811 lifestyle, and I find your website and all your videos to be extremely inspirational! I wanted to say that, unlike S, I did Not find this video offensive at all. And I totally agree that the Standard American Diet is definitely somewhat of an eating disorder and what an epidemic it is! I hope your site and others can reach and educate many many people.
Most people who talk about fruitarianism, liquidism, breatharianism or let alone fasting, have no experience whatsoever on alternative diet. It is therefore very hard to take seriously someone who speaks on assumptions and misconceptions alone.
Also I would like to say that fruitarianism is not about eating tonnes of fruits, it is about listening to your body and eat when it needs it as well. It is important to understand that the whole concept of calories is another conditioning that you have to get rid of. Once you try living on less food you will realize that it has nothing to do with calories but with the life force within the food that you eat. The energy within the food is what is truly retaiined by the body which then transform it in whatever in needs (vitamins, proteins..) to nourish its organs.
The concept of calories is flawed because it doesn't take into account the life force of food. Hence the reason it is possible to live on fruits, they are still alive, unprocessed thus full of life energy. I know it may sound crazy but once you experience it you will see the importance of other energies around.
Anyway, there is no need to talk…try it and you'll see for yourself!
All I can say is that cooked and processed food are dead!
